Grave robbers, dark magic, mad scientists, and forbidden love!
Supernatural Secret Service agents Owen Sharps and Calvin Springfield are back in action, heading to Chicago to investigate a sudden spike in missing bodies. Rumors about a showman’s new invention to bring the dead back to life catch their attention, and so do stories about a shadowy doctor replacing damaged body parts with pieces from stolen corpses.
After their first case together, Calvin and Owen fell in love and discovered their partnership held true both on and off the job. It’s dangerous to be two men in love in 1897, but they’re willing to face any risk to be together and keep each other safe.
In Chicago, they team up with psychics, witches, and intrepid newspaper reporters to get to the truth about who is stealing corpses and what’s behind the dark intentions of the resurrectionists. Even the Mob has a stake in the game.
The ghosts of the murdered men demand justice, and it’s going to take plenty of magic and firepower to stop the graverobbers, end the illicit market for body parts, prevent a war between two Mob families, and keep a mad inventor from shifting the boundary between the living and the dead.
Equalizer is a high-stakes steampunk MM romance thrill ride filled with found family, paranormal Pinkertons, intrepid reporters, body snatchers and resurrectionists, Mob witches, vengeful spirits, dark spells, unholy inventions, and a love that won’t be denied.
Before Colt and Winchester, there was Sharps & Springfield!
Equalizer is the second book in the Sharps & Springfield series.
REVIEW:
Disclaimer: I thought I would start off with – you must read book one in this series, before starting this one. You will be completely lost if you don’t. Ok now to the good stuff. I love this series and this book.
Once again, Morgan has outdone herself with the continued worldbuilding in this series. We’ve moved the series to Chicago for this book, and I could just picture all the places she mentioned in the book (I grew up there).
Her character development gets better and better. I loved learning more about Calvin and Owen, there is such a depth of character that these guys just leap off the page. But she doesn’t skimp on her side characters either. From Winston to the Pinkerton agents, Newspaper journalist to the Chicago Mob no stone is left unturned, and it is a real treat to see these people come to life.
Brilliant writing that weaves a magical tale that involves so many moving parts, I don’t know how she keeps it all straight. The level of research done shines through as she delves deeper into the reasons that bring Owen and Calvin to Chicago. The prose just sucks you in and you don’t want to put the book down. I found it to be historically accurate and a thoroughly intriguing and entertaining mystery for the guys to solve. For those that are interested, there is the appropriate amount of sexy times – based on the world of the 1890’s.
Who is behind the missing dead bodies? Is there a connection between a doctor, a showman and the mob? Well, I’m not going to tell you. You will need to read this one for yourself to find out all the twists and turns being channeled in this book.
I highly recommend this book, the second book in the Sharps & Springfield series. Remember to read the series in order. Don’t walk but run to your favorite eBook purchasing site and snatch this one up. I can’t wait to see what comes next for Owen, Calvin and the gang.
